Context of the CFP

The German-French Academy for the Industry of the Future (GFA) is a bilateral initiative created and officialized during the German-French digital conference on October 27, 2015.

TUM and IMT have been engaged to convert the political wish expressed by our governments to enhance the competitiveness of our economies, foster French-German cooperation, and address the digital transformation of our industry. To pursue these objectives, the GFA acts in three areas: research, education, and innovation.

On a research level, the Academy has funded 29 TUM/IMT research tandem projects since 2017 with a substantial benefit for the ecosystem.

Objectives of the Call for Proposals

The aim of the German-French Academy for the Industry of the Future is to enhance research and innovation collaboration between France and Germany. To achieve this goal, the academy supports doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows, and tenure-track professors from the Technical University of Munich or the Institut Mines-Télécom, enabling them to pursue research opportunities in both countries. Through these mobility grants, researchers based in Germany or France can conduct research stays at the partner institute in the neighbour country. The supported researchers strongly focus on topics fitting in the scope of Industry 4.0.

Expected outcomes of the exchange:

• joint publications,
• joint project proposals,
• a scientific workshop, conference, summer or winter school, or a dedicated event to share the outcomes and know-how with the community.

A final report presenting the results of the exchange in English has to be provided to the GFA.

Framework and Scope

This call for projects is aimed primarily at reviving the activities between research groups from the 29 past research projects of the GFA.

• Up to 10 candidates will be selected.
• Applications can be submitted by doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows, and tenure-track professors (doctorate within the past 7 years) from TUM / IMT.
• There must be an existing exchange between two persons from the research groups from TUM and IMT who already had collaborations. (This means there must have been a TUM/IMT collaboration within the research group, but it doesn’t have to be the involved persons.)
• Research levels can be mixed (for example, exchange between a PhD and a tenure-track professor). The PhD would be endorsed through a signature from the professor on the application.
• The exchange must take place between November 2023 and September 2024. The funding is allocated for a period of up to three months. In case of a longer stay for research purposes, the funding can be used as complementary funding.
• All research fields are eligible for funding.

Funding

The program’s beneficiaries receive monthly grants of €1,600 (PhD students) or €2,100 (post-doctoral researchers and tenure-track professors) to cover travel and accommodation costs.

TUM researchers must follow the usual process for reimbursement via the Zentrale Reisekostenstelle. The funding the selected candidate will receive may be, at most, the amount stated in the notification. The rules of the Bayerische Reisekostengesetz apply.
