Modelling and decision-making platform for Reconfigurable, Digitalized, Servitized and Sustainable Production Systems (RDS-Production)
Today’s challenges in the manufacturing industry include constantly changing requirements, a more volatile demand, increasingly varied products and new expectations in the field of sustainability. To meet these challenges, companies must deploy flexible and reconfigurable systems and utilize them digitally within their network. Additionally, new business models and services can have to be applied.
This project develops a framework, showing the connection of digitalization, servitization and sustainability in the field of reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS). The aim is to make innovative solutions for the holistic management of reconfigurable, digitalized, servitized and sustainable systems available for industrial uset.

The extensive requirement analysis we conducted shows that the potentials of RMS have not been exploited yet. New digital technologies – such as advanced optimization techniques and digital twins – or new business models – like servitization – can make a huge difference in how and how well RMS can be used.
Our goals
Our goal is to exploit the possibilities of reconfigurable systems and to simplify and improve their use and implementation. The topics we focus on are:
- Digitization: Application of technologies such as AI, optimization methods and Digital Twins;
- Servitization: Increasing flexibility by creating new business models;
- Sustainability: Using reconfigurability to save energy and reduce the carbon footprint.
In achieving our goal, it is particularly important for us to draw on experience from the industry and to take a holistic view of the management of RMS.
